根據牛津字典，「中產」一詞最早見於十八世紀的歐洲，用於形容當時冒起的，處於農民與貴族之間的社會階級。後來經過法國大革命及工業革命，貴族及農民都在減少，中產不再視乎出身，改為根據收入及財產。

而中產的定義近年來一直引起各界熱議，按美國標準，中產家庭的年入介乎全國中位數的三分之二至兩倍，相當於4至12萬元。所以套用此準則的話，香港的中產月入應介乎1.5萬至4.5萬，但有些人卻認為此定義早已不合時宜。
有人認為所謂的中產應該以買不買得起太古城來區分，至2018年3月，太古城實用面積呎價1.95萬元，792呎單位1544萬元。假設家庭月入12萬元，每月儲蓄一半，也要儲二十年才買得起。在此中產門檻越來越高的年代，究竟我們可以如何增加收入以達到中產的標準?
成為中產的新途徑 —「睡後收入」
大多數普通人的第一桶金難免來自努力工作和慳儉儲蓄，但在這科技發達的年代，除了同時需要持續增進投資智慧，我們更應利用自己的才能和興趣，在主業之外以個體戶形式開創副業，去發展出屬於自己的「睡後收入」。
所謂的「睡後收入」就是指連睡覺那8小時甚麼都無做的情況下也能為你帶來收入，有一種傳統理論將一日24小時分成三段，聲稱在日間上班8小時之外，下班後、睡覺前那8小時更能影響你的人生，例如是否善用這段時間增進知識、鍛鍊身體、拓展社交，抑或只是攤屍碌手機，都會決定你能否晉升中產階層。總之我們除了要努力打工，也要努力開拓「睡後收入」，務求在睡覺之時也能財源滾滾，最好「睡後收入」能超越日間打工收入，這樣才是現今社會的致富之道。
要開拓「睡後收入」其實絕對不難，除了那些投資產品，現今最常見的方法絕對是開設一個Facebook/Instagram專頁、Youtube頻道等，利用社交媒體去上載關於自己興趣或專長的內容，只要具有一定水平及特色，堅持努力更新，其實你已經可以贏了超過一半對手，當累積了相當的內容和Fans，即使在你入睡期，只要有人點擊你的內容，便已經可以為你帶來廣告進賬，成為「睡後收入」。這亦能反映出現今社會只要有恆心，人人都有機會成為KOL。
想要符合新中產的標準，最理想的情況下，能夠擁有一個人的物業、股票等投資再加上個人副業，達到所謂的財務自由，自然會成為貧富懸殊下的贏家，成為新中產，活得比good old days 更加滋潤美好。但知易行難，香港人的工時長得連八小時的睡眠時間都缺乏，還可以如何經營出自己的「睡後收入」呢?
